With the new law on mobilization coming into force on May 18, vehicles can be seized from Ukrainians for the needs of the Armed Forces. However, it is not only cars, but also, for example, agricultural and construction equipment.

The Ministry of Defense explained how this rule will work, as set out in the new law on mobilization.

Only vehicles suitable for military use (watercraft, trucks, off-road vehicles, specialized equipment) can be seized from owners of two or more vehicles. They will take the one that suits the army better.

A car cannot be taken away from a person for whom driving is the main source of income; from a disabled person of group I or II; or from a parent of a child with such a disability.

The decision to seize the car must be issued by the local state administration. The car can be taken away by representatives of the TCC, the SBU, and intelligence agencies. An act of acceptance and transfer must be drawn up.

The vehicles must be returned within 30 days after the demobilization is announced.
