Speaker of the US Congress announces the possibility of providing aid to Ukraine on credit

Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson said that the aid package for Ukraine will include "some important innovations," such as the possibility of providing aid on credit. This is reported by The Hill.

Johnson said that with a historically narrow majority in the House of Representatives, he was in a difficult position, but added that he had been working during the current work period to develop the package and plans to put it to a vote when the House returns to work.

"When it comes to additional funding, we are working to build consensus. We've been talking to all members, especially now, while we're working in the district. When we come back after this period of work, we will be pushing the product, but I think it will have some important innovations," he said in a statement.

As an example, he cited the possibility of granting a loan to Ukraine. The publication notes that this idea gained some traction in early March as a way to support Ukraine in a way that would ease Republican concerns about providing more aid.

Johnson also mentioned the REPO for Ukrainians Act, which authorizes the president to seize Russian sovereign assets frozen in the United States and transfer them to Ukraine for use against Russia.

"Even President Trump has talked about a loan concept where we don't just provide foreign aid. We establish such a relationship so that they can return it to us when the time comes," the speaker said.

The publication emphasizes that these statements came after Johnson made it clear that he intends to push through legislation that will provide funding for Ukraine, but he has not yet decided what exactly it will look like.
