Due to the fact that $60 billion in US aid has been frozen in Congress, Ukrainian defense companies are trying to establish production of 155-mm artillery shells in accordance with NATO standards. This was reported by The Washington Post, citing an unnamed source at the state defense enterprise Ukroboronprom.
According to the publication, Ukraine practically did not produce weapons before Russia's full-scale invasion, but now the local defense industry is "thriving."
In particular, according to WP, Ukraine produces various types of drones, maritime drones, mortars, and Soviet-style 122-mm and 152-mm artillery shells.
In addition, Ukrainian defense companies are trying to meet the needs of the Ukrainian Armed Forces by establishing the production of 155-mm shells needed for artillery systems supplied by Western allies.
A source at Ukroboronprom told The Washington Post that production of 155-mm artillery shells will begin "no earlier than the second half of this year." The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, did not provide additional details.
