The cessation of US support for Ukraine cannot be completely filled by Europe, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky believes. He said this in an interview with the German television company ARD.
"Europe alone will not be able to cope if the US support is terminated. Neither with weapons nor financially. If the whole of Europe were united, it could give enough support to Ukraine, but the United States has influence, and when the signals are not very positive, they have the same influence on some European leaders," he said.
"So I think that if the United States does not, God forbid, provide support, it will affect the united Europe," he said.
The President believes that this will lead to a shortage of weapons and finances in Ukraine.
"Secondly, I think the alliance between the United States and Europe will be lost. Thirdly, Europe itself will realize that this is a signal that if Ukraine does not stand and Putin goes ahead, and this is a signal from the United States, that Europe will be left alone," he said.
"I think that the sanctions policy will also 'fall apart'. Because the United States of America, when it supports Ukraine, also influences the sanctions policy of European countries," Zelensky said.
He added that he would like Germany to take the lead in this case.
"Germany can do this, consolidate the European Union. Many countries have serious economic relations with Germany because it is a powerful European economy. But still, I think this threat is very high. Because this is a signal. And it's not a good one. The passivity of the United States is wrong," Zelensky said.
