EU Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton said that the EU could still meet its goal of producing one million artillery shells by this spring, which could then be shipped to Ukraine, Politico reports.
In his opinion, achieving this goal will require a reduction in exports to non-EU countries, as well as pressure from member governments on their arms industries to increase production.
"We are only the European Commission," he said, but emphasized that it is "absolutely" possible to reach the one million goal by March or April.
The European Commissioner added that the EU could be on par with Russia in arms production within 18 months to two years, saying it was "extremely important for the EU to have the same potential."
