Latvian Foreign Minister Krisjanis Karinš has said that after the war in Ukraine is over, NATO will have to work on a long-term strategy to deter Russia. Latvian Foreign Minister Krisjanis Karinš said this in an interview with the Financial Times.
According to the minister, Russia has an imperialist ideology, and therefore the threat from it will remain even after the change of president or when Ukraine returns its territories.
"Russia will not stop, Russia can only be stopped. Stopping Russia in Ukraine does not mean that everything is over. It just means that we will have to continue. This is what is important for NATO: we will have to work on a long-term strategy to contain Russia," the Foreign Minister added.
In addition, Karinš called on NATO to increase its capabilities and ensure interoperability of the defense industry to standardize weapons and share ammunition among allies.
The Latvian foreign minister also expressed his belief that after the war is over, Russia will rebuild its military machine and try to provoke and create new difficulties on its border. Therefore, NATO must show determination and invest in defense to avoid future incidents.
