The Abrams tanks have not yet proved themselves during the war in Ukraine, although two months have passed since they were delivered, Forbes reports.
"It's unclear what Ukraine is doing with its 31 Abrams," the article says.
Their absence on the battlefield is attributed to the fact that American tanks are vulnerable to FPV drones from above and from the side. That's where the M1 has the thinnest armor.
"An FPV, even with an old anti-tank charge, can penetrate this area, killing or injuring a crew member. It can damage various electronic components inside the tower or set it on fire and force the crew to evacuate," the article says.
The authors also believe that the tank's side protection is outdated. It is covered by "outdated composite armor side skirts".
Therefore, the article recommends that the Abrams armor be reinforced with additional anti-drone protection, and only then should the tanks be transferred to combat units.
