Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy called Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky a "Nazi" during a debate. His campaign is currently trying to clarify the wording of this statement, The Hill reports.
During the debate, Ramaswamy noted that, in his opinion, Ukraine is not an "illustration of democracy."
"This is a country that has banned 11 opposition parties. It has merged all media into one state television. This is not democratic. It has threatened not to hold elections this year if the US does not provide more money. This is not democratic. They glorified a Nazi in their ranks - a comedian in cargo pants, a man named Zelensky. This is not democratic," he said.
After the debate, representatives of Ramaswamy's campaign headquarters said that his statements about Nazis did not apply to Zelensky. According to them, Ramaswamy was rather referring to an incident in the Canadian parliament related to Ukrainian-Canadian veteran Yaroslav Hunko, a former member of the SS Galicia Division.
