Russia has begun construction of a railway in occupied south of Ukraine - from Rostov-on-Don through Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions to Crimea. The road is expected to become a backup to the Crimean bridge. This was announced by the Russian-appointed "governor" of Zaporizhzhia region, Yevgeny Balytskyi, in an interview with Russian media.
According to him, construction will begin from the village of Yakymivka in Zaporizhzhia region.
Balytskyi said that the construction of one branch, even without electric traction, would solve "the military's tasks" and "the export of grain, iron ore, scrap, coal and many elements that need to be connected to the big land." He added that the road is also needed because the road across the Crimean bridge is, firstly, far away, and secondly, it "is an object of increased danger."
The "governor" also said that an air hub is planned to be developed in Melitopol on the basis of the existing airport.
