Balticconnector gas pipeline: Estonia claims damage caused by mechanical destruction

The damage to the Balticconnector gas pipeline connecting Estonia and Finland was apparently caused by "brutal mechanical impact". Investigators are not ruling anything out at this time, but all indications are that the damage was caused by mechanical destruction. Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur told Reuters.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, on his way to a meeting of alliance defense ministers to discuss Russia's war against Ukraine, said that if the damage is proven to be caused by an attack, it will be met with a "united and decisive" response.

The incident comes a little over a year after the larger Nord Stream gas pipelines crossing the Baltic Sea between Russia and Germany were damaged by explosions that authorities called deliberate sabotage.

Earlier, we reported that Russia attacked the Baltic Connector offshore gas pipeline between Finland and Estonia. Authorities estimated that it was out of commission for several months. This was reported by Iltalehti.
