The Financial Times reports that potential financial support for Ukraine from the EU is under threat due to conflicts within the EU.
Brussels has combined financial support for Ukraine (20 billion euros) with demands to replenish the EU budget (66 billion euros) to cover interest costs on debts and increase salaries of European officials. Most countries do not have any questions about helping Ukraine, but there are disagreements on the second point.
Most of the questions have come from Germany and the Netherlands, which say that it is not the right time to tighten national budget belts.
"Brussels is asking member states to make larger contributions. That is, the statement "Brussels needs our money to increase the salaries of the Commission members in line with inflation" is not the best domestic political platform for a national leader," a European diplomat told the publication.
