According to a new report by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Ukrainian military successes in the Robotyne area bring the counteroffensive closer to the second line of defense of Russian forces. Analysts predict that this line may be less fortified than the first.
The report, published on August 22, notes that analysts have not detected any new Russian formations and units in western Zaporizhzhia region, with the exception of the 7th Airborne Division and elements of Akhmat-South. According to the experts, they are likely to replace the forces that have already participated in hostilities.
In addition, analysts noted that the 22nd and 45th brigades of Russian special forces have taken up positions behind the first line of defense. According to the reports, special forces may also be located behind the second line of defense.
Experts have noted that the forces conducting tactical counterattacks against the Ukrainian Armed Forces in Zaporizhzhia region have been significantly weakened. The Russian Federation lacks operational reserves. Limited troop movements to the west of Zaporizhzhia region have also been recorded. There are unused troops on the second line of defense.
According to analysts, this may mean that "the second line of Russian defense may be less fortified." However, data on the number and quality of forces on the second line of defense of the Russian armed forces remain unknown.
