British Foreign Secretary James Cleverley could take over as Defense Secretary after Ben Wallace steps down.
As The Times informs with reference to its sources, the defense direction is one of the most important in the government of Rishi Sunak, and Cleverley has experience in this area not only because of his current position, but also because he is a military reservist.
However, the candidacy of the current head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is not the only one.
In addition to him, former Minister of Foreign Trade Anne-Marie Trevelyan, as well as junior Minister of Security Tom Tugendhat are being considered for the position of the head of the Ministry of Defense.
Other candidates for the job included junior defense minister James Hippie, chief secretary to the Treasury John Glen and House of Commons leader Penny Mordont.
It will be recalled that Ben Wallace previously noted that the territory of Ukraine is now a "combat laboratory" where Western and Ukrainian-made weapons are being experimented with to defend against a Russian invasion.
This is reported by Sky News.
According to him, "Ukraine's desire to survive" led to the fact that the country abandoned the rules and norms of peacetime in order to test new weapons, which, in particular, were provided by the allies.
"They had to take risks and experiment with things that they might not have known if they worked or not, and they became a combat laboratory for their own forces, and that showed us (Western countries - ed.) the way... I regret the circumstances that during which it happened, but it showed how to act in the 21st century on a new battlefield," said the head of the Ministry of Defense.
As previously reported, on July 15, Wallace confirmed rumors that he no longer intends to head the Ministry of Defense and is going to leave after the end of his term of office in the fall of this year. He also noted that he informed the prime minister about his decision on June 16, but decided to keep it a secret.
There is a version in the media that such a decision was made after Sunak failed to convince the US and other NATO countries that Wallace should become the new head of the Alliance instead of Jens Stoltenberg, whose mandate was extended for another term.
