In an interview with the British newspaper The Times, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda said that NATO should place permanent military bases near the Russian borders and abandon the act on the Alliance's relations with Russia, which has been in effect since 1997.
"As Russia takes active steps to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus – and we have every evidence that this is happening – we must finally declare this Russia-NATO foundational act dead," he said.
According to the President of Lithuania, as long as this act exists, it "prevents many capitals from thinking soberly and keeps them in the gray zone of strategic ambiguity."
Ukraine has repeatedly said that it wants to receive a political invitation to the Alliance at the NATO summit in Vilnius (July 11-12). Although he understands that he cannot join him until the end of the war.
Budanov, the head of the Ukrainian SSR, believes that the expectations of the Ukrainian society from the NATO summit will not be met.
On July 10, on the eve of the NATO summit, Nauseda, together with NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg, confirmed that Ukraine can join the Alliance without the MAP.
