The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, called on the American leader, Joe Biden, to immediately invite Ukraine to NATO.
This is reported by CNN.
"He is for us to be in NATO in the future. Right now (an official invitation to NATO is necessary - ed.), this is very important," - CNN quotes Zelenskyі's own interview, the full version of which has not yet been published.
According to CNN, according to Zelensky, it is the president of the United States who decides whether Ukraine will join NATO or not.
Zelenskyi also noted that he understands that in fact Ukraine will not be able to join the alliance while the war is going on — but the invitation will be a very important signal and incentive for Ukrainian soldiers.
NATO summit in Vilnius
If Ukraine receives an official invitation to NATO, it will probably take place at the summit in Vilnius. It will be held from July 11 to 12 in the capital of Lithuania. It is known that Joe Biden will visit him.
The President's Office, in turn, named the condition under which Zelenskyi will attend the summit in Vilnius. Defense Minister Olesii Reznikov stated that Ukraine is ready to immediately sign the protocol on joining NATO.
Ambassador of the United States to the North Atlantic Alliance, Julianna Smith, also noted that the member states are close to a consensus on Ukraine's accession to NATO.
