A condition for any meaningful discussion of Ukraine's membership in NATO is its victory in the war against Russia.
This was stated by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg during a press conference.
He noted that now the Alliance allies agree on several important things. In particular, they support the open door policy, as well as Ukraine's membership in NATO in the future.
"We all agree that Ukraine will become a member of this Alliance. And we all agree that NATO allies and Ukraine should decide when the time will come to invite Ukraine to become a member of the Alliance," Stoltenberg added.
According to him, NATO member states believe that the most urgent task now is to ensure the victory of Ukraine as a sovereign and independent state.
"Because if President Putin (Russian dictator Vladimir Putin - ed.) wins this war, then the issue of membership will no longer be discussed at all. Therefore, the main focus should be on how to ensure the victory of Ukraine, and this is a condition for any meaningful discussion of further membership", - stressed the General Secretary.
Membership of Ukraine in NATO
It will be recalled that at the summit in Bucharest in 2008, NATO member states promised that Ukraine would become part of the Alliance in the future. Since then, no specifics on this issue have been heard.
Our country expects that the NATO summit in Vilnius, which will be held on July 11-12, will be a turning point. Western leaders declare the possibility of inviting Ukraine to the Alliance following the results of the meeting. This idea has already been supported by the President of Poland, Andrzej Duda.
At the same time, Ukraine wants to receive security guarantees that will deter Russia from a repeat attack before our country becomes part of NATO. The first agreements are expected to be approved also at the upcoming summit.
