Slovak President Zuzana Chaputova has announced that she will not run for a second presidential term.
She wrote about it on her Facebook page.
Chaputova stated that she took into account her family and realized that after the elections she would not have enough strength to fulfill the mandate for another five years.
"This statement is one of the hardest I've ever made in my life and probably will ever make. I've been through four of the hardest years of my life, both professionally and personally, and it's about to be the fifth, which is unlikely to be easier," said the president, four years have passed since her inauguration on June 15.
Chaputova recalled that she was in office during the coronavirus pandemic, the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation into Ukraine, the energy crisis and record inflation.
"I appreciate the trust that you all have placed in me. However, not letting it down means doing this job with full dedication and strength. Otherwise, it may happen that the presidency will serve me, and not me him," she said.
"Therefore, I will finish the last year of my mandate and my service in this position will be completed. I will not run for a second term," Chaputova said.
She promised during the last year of her mandate to work on fulfilling the promises made four years ago.
"I'm sorry if I disappoint those who expected me to run for office again," Chaputova added.
"Please don't take my decision not to run as proof that you can't succeed by being decent. You can win an election, hold office, and still be the most authoritative politician. The only way to defeat decent and valuable politics is to stop believing in it. all I still believe in her," she emphasized.
According to polls by several agencies, the president has been the most popular politician in Slovakia for a long time.
Denník N published the results of the Ipsos poll just today. 43% of respondents trust the head of state. The second most popular candidate is ex-Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini, who has the support of 36% of respondents.
We will remind you that the President of Slovakia, Zuzana Chaputova, is concerned that after the upcoming parliamentary elections, the foreign policy position of the country may become similar to the position of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
