Blinken in China: "The US does not support Taiwan's independence"

The US Secretary of State noted that in the event of a crisis surrounding Taiwan, the economic consequences would affect the entire world.

The United States of America does not support Taiwan's independence. This was stated by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken during a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, the BBC reports.

In particular, Blinken noted that there is growing concern about China's "provocative actions." After that, he emphasized that his country does not support the independence of Taiwan.

According to the US Secretary of State, if a crisis were to arise around Taiwan, then most likely, "it could cause an economic crisis that would affect the whole world." Blinken explained that 50% of commercial container traffic passes through the Taiwan Strait every day. At the same time, 70% of semiconductor exports go to Taiwan.

We will remind that Blinken is the highest US official who visited China during the administration of President Joe Biden, who took office in January 2021. Observers believe that the ministerial-level talks could pave the way for a meeting between Chinese leader Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden as early as this year.

On June 17, Biden said he hoped to meet with Xi "over the next few months" and talk "about how we can get along in areas where we can get along."

As the strategic rivalry between the United States and China escalates, other countries are concerned about the risk of military action by one of the two states.
