The Higher Regional Court of Vienna rejected the US request for the extradition of Ukrainian oligarch Dmytro Firtash, Teleprensa reports.
On Friday, June 16, the Austrian court ruled in favor of Firtash. Thus, the oligarch will remain in Austria until the completion of the new trial, and his case has been sent for retrial.
Firtash was arrested in March 2014 in Austria at the request of American investigators, but was released a few days later after paying a bail of 125 million euros. The United States has asked the authorities to extradite him on charges of bribery, corruption and money laundering, the media reported. In particular, he offered a bribe of 17 million euros to Indian government officials in exchange for a license to mine titanium for further sale in the United States. He faces up to 50 years in prison and confiscation of all assets. The oligarch denies all the charges against him.
