Romanian President Klaus Iohannis on Tuesday appointed Marcel Colaca, leader of the ruling coalition's Social Democratic Party, as prime minister as part of a prime ministerial rotation deal aimed at ensuring political stability.
This is reported by Reuters.
The left-wing Social Democrats and center-right Liberals formed a grand coalition government in late 2021 – along with a junior partner, the ethnic Hungarian UDMR party – and agreed that the two main parties would rotate prime ministers. On Monday, the liberal Nikolay Chuke filed for ret
avku from the post of prime minister.
The new Prime Minister of Romania
"The fact that we gathered here for the rotation of prime ministers shows a new level of involvement and seriousness of the ruling coalition. Romanians were promised stability, and they are getting it," Iohannis told reporters.
Ongoing negotiations over key ministries and jobs have already stalled policy-making, and Romania is lagging behind on reforms needed to unlock further tranches of European Union recovery funds, a key factor in the country's economic growth.
Cholaku confirmed plans for the new government to be approved by parliament and sworn in on Thursday.
The new cabinet will face demands for wage increases in various sectors of the public sector, including health care, while budget revenues this year have fallen short of targets.
