Swiss government websites became the object of a cyber attack

Switzerland's federal administration suffered a cyber attack on Monday, when access to the websites of several government agencies and state-owned companies was blocked.

This was reported by the Ministry of Finance of Switzerland, reports The Local.

The so-called distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack, which renders websites or network resources unavailable by flooding them with malicious traffic, was carried out by the same NoName group that carried out a similar attack on the Swiss parliament last week, the ministry said in a statement.

"Several federal administration websites were unavailable on Monday," it said, although Switzerland's main government portal, www.admin.ch, remained accessible.

Specialists of the federal administration quickly noticed the DDoS attack, the report says. It added that "measures are being taken to restore the availability of websites and applications as soon as possible."

"The NoName group claimed responsibility for this attack on the Internet. This group was also behind the attack on the parliament.ch website, which became known last week," the message reads.

The National Cyber Security Center (NCSC) is analyzing the attack with the affected administrative units and is working to determine a response.

Monday's announcement comes after the government warned last week that it feared data may have been stolen in a ransomware attack on Xplain, a technology firm that provides software for several agencies.

The Swiss army and the customs department are among the customers of Xplain, which supplies software for bodies specializing in internal security.

The government has said it does not believe Xplain systems have direct access to federal government systems.

Xplain blamed the attack on a hacker group called Play, which is also accused of a recent attack on two major Swiss media outlets.
