The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, Peter Szijjarto, said that the European Commission gave the green light for the further participation of Rosatom in the completion of the only Hungarian nuclear power plant, Paks.
According to Euronews, Sijarto said this on Thursday before participating in the meeting of foreign ministers of the EU countries.
The head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry reminded that the contracts for the construction of new blocks of the Paks NPP have been in place for nine years, and during this time the legal and technical circumstances have changed.
In order to complete the construction as soon as possible, it is necessary to make changes to the contracts, the criteria of which were agreed in Moscow with the representatives of Rosatom. Budapest submitted the changes to the European Union for approval under European law, and the European Commission approved them on Wednesday.
Sijarto said that the decision of the European Commission will speed up the implementation of the Paksh project and allow the commissioning of Paksh-2 in the early 2030s.
"Nuclear energy is of crucial importance for Hungary, and the construction of new Paks NPP units is a long-term guarantee of the security of Hungary's energy supply," he said.
