In the first reading, the Sejm of Latvia approved the amendments, which provide for the gradual repeal of the law on repatriation until 2028.
This is reported by Delfi.
According to the changes, as of July this year, returnees will be issued a temporary residence permit in Latvia instead of a permanent one. They will also have to prove their knowledge of the state language at least at a basic level.
From 2024, it is also planned to completely cancel the rule that allowed descendants of Latvians and Livs who are citizens of third countries to acquire repatriate status in Latvia.
And from July 2028, it is planned to cancel the Law "On Repatriation".
Earlier, such amendments to the Law "On Repatriation" and the Immigration Law have already been approved by the government.
The amendment still has to pass two parliamentary readings before its final adoption.
We would like to remind you that according to the current order, a permanent residence permit is issued to a repatriate based on the first application, which allows permanent residence in Latvia, free travel through the Schengen zone, receiving medical services and other social guarantees. At the same time, the repatriate does not need to prove that he really lives in Latvia, and will also confirm knowledge of the Latvian language.
