The European Union expressed its regret over the fact that Georgia's foreign policy and security policy are increasingly inconsistent with the relevant EU policies.

Peter Stano, a representative of the EU foreign policy service, stated this at a briefing in Brussels on Tuesday.

Stano noted that the EU regrets Georgia's decision to resume flights to and from Russia after Russia's decision to lift the ban on flights last week.

"Due to Russia's illegal war against Ukraine, the EU and a number of other states imposed sanctions against the Russian aviation sector. We and our partners do not allow flights from Russia and over Russia.

The latest decision of the Georgian authorities causes concern in view of Georgia's path to the EU and Georgia's obligation to coordinate (its decisions. - Ed.) with EU decisions in foreign policy, as provided for in the Georgia-EU Association Agreement," the representative said.

Stano noted that, unfortunately, the level of coordination of Georgia's foreign policy and security policy with relevant EU policies has decreased from 44% last year to 31% this year.

"It really causes our concerns, it really causes great sympathy," he stated.

On May 11, the European Union calls on the Georgian authorities to comply with the sanctions against the Russian aviation industry, which were introduced after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

On May 10, Russian President Vladimir Putin canceled the visa regime for Georgian citizens and at the same time lifted the ban on flights of Russian airlines to Georgia.

Over the past two days, Georgia has allowed two airlines to operate direct flights to Russia.

Russia suspended flights to Georgia in 2019 after the events known as "Gavrilov night".
