"Georgian Dream" refuses observer status in the Party of European Socialists (PES). This was announced by the chairman of Mria, Irakliy Kobakhidze, after the meeting of the party's political committee.
"Georgian Dream" has had observer status in PES since 2015. Socialists recently expressed outrage over Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili's speech at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) and his political alliance with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. The party planned to review the status of "Georgian Dream" at the June meeting of the presidium.
Irakliy Kobakhidze says that the Party of European Socialists, despite cooperation with Mria, did not properly support Georgian partners. For example, according to him, party members supported "absurd resolutions of the European Parliament", which, in particular, called for sanctions against billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili. In addition, the leader of the ruling party of Georgia announced the "ideological transformation" of European socialists.
Now, according to Kobakhidze, "Georgian Dream" will cooperate with all European political parties "on equal terms".
