The possibility of Ukraine joining the North Atlantic Alliance is currently not being discussed. This question is not studied as before.
This was stated by the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, in an interview with the Spanish TV channel laSexta.
At the same time, Borrell reminded that Ukraine has been asking to join the Alliance for a long time and added: "The issue of Ukraine joining NATO is not on the table, it was not before."
The head of European diplomacy also noted that decisions regarding Ukraine's membership in the Alliance will be made by its members, and it does not depend on the NATO Secretary General.
Commenting on Finland's entry into NATO and Sweden's intention to join the Alliance, he stated that these countries remained neutral until the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation into Ukraine.
"They were neutral countries that never wanted to know anything about NATO. But when they saw that Russia invaded Ukraine, they said that the only way to guarantee our security is to be members of the Alliance, and they asked for accelerated joining," Borrell explained.
It will be recalled that NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg recently stated that all NATO member states support the idea of Ukraine joining the Alliance. However, the question is when it will happen.
In addition, President Volodymyr Zelenskyі said earlier that Ukraine understands that it will not be able to become a member of NATO during the war, but wants to receive a clear signal that it will gain membership after the end of hostilities.
