Sweden hopes that it will officially become part of NATO before the alliance's summit in Vilnius, which will be held on July 11-12.
According to ERR, this was stated by the Minister of Defense of Sweden, Paul Jonsson.
He reminded that Sweden started the process of joining NATO together with Finland, but the countries could not become members of the Alliance at the same time.
"The fact that Finland is already in NATO is good for Sweden's security. But, of course, it is important that we be able to join the Alliance as soon as possible. We want to do it before the NATO summit in Vilnius, which will take place on July 11-12," the minister emphasized.
The official clarified that Stockholm had an understanding that there are more differences between Sweden and Turkey than in the case of Finland. But now his country has taken a number of steps under the tripartite memorandum between the countries, including changing legislation to combat terrorism.
Jonson added that "only Hungary can decide for Hungary and Turkey - for Turkey" in the matter of ratifying Sweden's membership in the Alliance. But it would be best to complete the process as soon as possible.
According to him, Sweden now feels a lot of support from the USA and other allies of the Alliance.
We will remind, earlier the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sweden, Tobias Bilström, stated that there is hope that his country will be able to join NATO in July this year.
