The Belgian authorities are studying the mechanisms that will allow the frozen assets of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation to be sent to help Ukraine.
This was stated by the Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croo in The Hague at a joint press conference with the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi and the Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte.
"In March of last year, Belgium seized almost 200 million euros of income from Russian assets that were previously frozen. We use these funds exclusively to support Ukraine and help Ukrainian refugees," de Croo said.
He emphasized that it is necessary to go further and not only to freeze interest on assets, but also to completely confiscate these assets.
According to him, since the beginning of the war, Belgian financial authorities have frozen more than 58 billion euros of Russian assets of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation.
And now we are studying how they can be fully used to support the military effort and the reconstruction of Ukraine. And Belgium is ready to play a leading role in this process. I have been saying since the beginning of the war that we should use Russian money to rebuild the country they are destroying. . It is expedient from the point of view of the economy, but first of all from the point of view of morality," added de Croo.
Earlier it was reported that the intentions of the European Commission to use the frozen assets of the Central Bank of Russia to restore Ukraine faced legal obstacles, as well as the fact that not all member states were able to identify all these assets on their territory.
