The authorities of Georgia: if the EU does not give us the status of a candidate - "no problem"

The mayor of Tbilisi, Kakha Kaladze, who is one of the key speakers of the Georgian ruling party "Georgian Dream", said that not granting the country the status of a candidate for membership in the European Union would not be a negative event.

According to the mayor of Tbilisi, the Georgian government is "ready to bring the case to the end and do everything for the country to receive" the status of a candidate for EU membership.

"But it is not up to us what decision they make. If they give it to us, we will be happy. If they don't give it, it's no problem either," Kaladze said.

He also said once again that Georgia deserved the status of a candidate for the European Union more than Ukraine and Moldova, if we compare the pace of reforms and successes in the fight against corruption.

"Don't think that we are blaming a country that is at war. God forbid. On the contrary, I will always be happy for the successes of Ukrainians. However, if you look realistically, with parameters and figures, Georgia is the first to take concrete steps - carry out reforms, fight corruption." - believes Kaladze.

According to him, the refusal of Georgia's candidate status last year "was a political decision" because the government "does not join the sanctions, does not start a war and does not open a second front in the country." "All this was used as a kind of leverage," says the mayor of Tbilisi.

It was previously reported that the European Commission is considering recommending to EU member states to start accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova, and to grant candidate status to Georgia.
