France's opposition vows to oppose Macron's pension reform until it is repealed

The French opposition has said it will not stop protesting against President Emmanuel Macron's high-profile pension reform until it is repealed.

This is stated in the Euractiv publication.

The left-wing coalition NUPES, which brings together the far left, socialists, communists and greens, has vowed to continue taking to the streets until the bill is repealed altogether. This was announced on Sunday by several deputies who are opponents of the reform. In the next few days, they want to present a new vote of no confidence in the government.

"Nothing about the way the law was passed was democratic," left-wing lawmaker Manuel Bompard, a close ally of Jean-Luc Melenchon, said in an interview with the Journal du Dimanche on Sunday.

Bompar alleges that the government misused constitutional tools to speed up the debate and hide information about the true effects of the bill.

Socialist Party head Olivier Faure accused Macron of stoking frustration and anger across the country.

As for the leader of the extreme right, Marine Le Pen, whose support has increased significantly in the process of implementing the reform, she placed the responsibility for the social crisis on Macron and the left parties, which refused to hold a full-fledged parliamentary debate.

Le Pen called for a referendum on the bill or to dissolve the National Assembly, otherwise "the president must resign."

Meanwhile, Macron is due to deliver an address on Monday "in the spirit of reconciliation", while unions unanimously rejected his invitation to a meeting at the Elysee Palace. A new round of protests should take place on May 1.

France's constitutional court upheld Macron's pension reform, which raises the retirement age from 62 to 64, on Friday. In a few hours, the bill was approved by President Macron himself.
