In Germany, last year was a record for the number of ATM explosions with the purpose of robbery, prompting officials to think about additional measures to prevent such crimes.

The Federal Criminal Police believes that 2022 became a record year for the number of ATM bombings - there were about 500 bombings and incomplete attempts of such crimes. In 2021, 392 cases were registered, in 2020 - 414.
In this situation, the federal and state governments are thinking about measures that would reduce the interest of criminals - such as protective smoke systems, gluing or painting money in an ATM when it is physically interfered with.
Interior Minister Nancy Fazer noted that if banks do not adequately respond to the trend and improve existing protection systems, it will have to be written down as a liability.
At the same time, representatives of the banking sector call it a strange approach when they try to shift the key responsibility for crime prevention to themselves.
