Prime Minister of Finland Sanna Marin submitted a request to President Saula Niiniste for the resignation of the government.
The ceremony took place at the official residence of the President of Finland on Thursday morning, reports Finnish broadcaster Yle.
The resignation of Marin's government is connected with the holding of parliamentary elections in the country on April 2, in which her Social Democrats took third place.
"Dear president of the republic, I respectfully ask you to dismiss me and other members of the government council," said Marin.
President Niiniste accepted the resignation request. Marin's government will operate in an interim capacity until the parties form a new cabinet.
Petteri Orpo, head of the National Coalition Party, which won the election, will start consultations on forming a government next week.
