Earthquakes in Turkey and Syria: death toll approaches 8,000, two Ukrainians rescued

As a result of devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, more than 7,900 people died, tens of thousands were injured.

 This is reported by Anadolu.

The death toll from Monday's devastating earthquakes in southern Turkey has risen to 5,894, Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay said in the early hours of Wednesday.

Oktay reported that the number of people injured as a result of powerful earthquakes in Kahramanmaras province is 34,810.

"The loss of every citizen deeply saddens us," Oktay told reporters, adding that authorities were continuing rescue efforts to help survivors.

According to him, 5,775 buildings collapsed. More than 8,000 people were rescued from the rubble of buildings.

The country has declared a three-month state of emergency in 10 provinces so that search and rescue operations and other measures can be carried out as soon as possible.

The Syrian Civil Defense, known as the White Helmets, said on Tuesday that the death toll in rebel-held areas of northwestern Syria had risen to 1,220 and wounded 2,600.

These numbers are expected to "significantly increase due to the fact that there are hundreds of families under the rubble," the group added.

"Our teams are continuing search and rescue operations in difficult conditions," the statement said, citing more than 400 completely destroyed buildings, more than 1,300 partially destroyed buildings and thousands more that were damaged by the earthquake.

At least 812 deaths have been confirmed in government-controlled areas of Syria, according to the state news agency SANA.

As reported, two Ukrainians, whom the Turkish side considered dead after a series of devastating earthquakes in the country, were rescued.
