On Friday, Palestinian militants fired two rockets from the Gaza Strip towards southern Israel, which were intercepted by the anti-missile defense system, prompting Israel to strike Gaza. This is reported by Reuters.
The fire follows an Israeli raid on the occupied West Bank on Thursday, which resulted in the highest death toll in years of fighting.
Overnight, rockets set off sirens in Israeli communities near the Gaza border, warning residents to take cover. There are no reports of casualties.
An Israeli channel showed footage of Israeli interceptor rockets being fired into the night sky over the city of Ashkelon, about 12 km north of the Gaza Strip, which is controlled by the Islamist group Hamas.
Later, the Israeli military announced that it had struck Gaza. Palestinian witnesses said Israeli aircraft targeted a Hamas training camp.
Tensions flared after Israeli commandos killed seven gunmen and two civilians in a raid on the hotly contested city of Jenin. Hamas and the smaller Islamic Jihad militant group have vowed to respond.
