Ukraine can agree to negotiations with the aggressor country of the Russian Federation, if they are based on a number of basic, universal principles.
The press secretary of the President of Ukraine, Serhiy Nikiforov, said this in an interview with journalist Oleksiy Sukhanov.
He emphasized that the Russian Federation does not want real negotiations now, but only Kyiv's agreement to the Kremlin's ultimatums.
"You need to call a spade a spade. What Russia is now calling negotiations are not negotiations, they are inviting us to come and sign an ultimatum.
Ukraine does not refuse negotiations. But Ukraine says that these negotiations should be based on a certain number of principles," Nikiforov explained.
He clarified that it is about universal principles: respect for the UN Charter; respect for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine; a guarantee that such aggression will not occur again; the principle of the rule of law, that is, all crimes of the Russian Federation must be assessed and held accountable; compensation for damages caused by the full-scale war unleashed by the Russian Federation.
"These are basic universal principles that are suitable for any situation. If the negotiations are based on these principles, Ukraine, I think, will consider the possibility of such negotiations very, very seriously," Nikiforov assured.
As you know, statements are periodically heard in the West about the need for "guarantees" for the Russian Federation or negotiations with the aggressor country.
At the same time, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Great Britain, James Cleverley, emphasized that the Kremlin can use the topic of negotiations with Kyiv to rearm the Russian army and prepare a new offensive against our country.
