Russia protested to Lithuania over the ban on transit of goods to Kaliningrad

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia protested to Lithuania for banning the transit of goods through the country to the Kaliningrad region. Charge d'Affaires Virginia Umbrasene was summoned to the office for this purpose.

This is reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.

"The head of the diplomatic mission is strongly protesting against the ban imposed by Vilnius without prior notification of the Russian side on the transit of a large range of cargo by rail through the territory of Lithuania to the Kaliningrad region," reads the statement.

The Foreign Ministry urged to immediately repeal the ban on transit of goods.

"We consider provocative measures of the Lithuanian side, violating international legal obligations of Lithuania, primarily the Joint Statement of the Russian Federation and the EU on transit between the Kaliningrad region and the rest of Russia of 2002, as openly hostile," reads the statement.

The agency stated that Russia reserves the right to act to "protect its national interests.

As a reminder, on June 18, Lithuanian Railways stopped transit of a number of Russian goods to Kaliningrad.

Earlier, a Polish general and former commander of the land forces, Waldemar Skrzyczak, stated that the Kaliningrad region was under Russian occupation. He believes that Poland should "assert its rights".
