US President Joe Biden's administration has approved the sending of long-range multiple-launch rocket systems to Ukraine, which can help Ukraine defend its territory in Donbas.
This was reported by The New York Times, citing US officials.
The weapons transfer is likely to be announced next week, the official said on condition of anonymity.
The weapons will include mobile missile launchers that can shoot much farther than the launchers Ukraine currently uses, the newspaper said.
Although officials did not provide details on what types of missiles the United States will provide, the Pentagon most commonly uses the M31 GMLRS (Gueded Multiple Launch Rocket System). It is a high-precision, satellite-guided weapon carrying about the same amount of explosives as a 500-pound aerial bomb.
The United States also plans to include HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems on wheeled truck chassis in the next arms package for Ukraine.
On the previous day, Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba asked the United States to make a decision on the provision of multiple rocket launchers as soon as possible.
