Canada recognized the deportation of Crimean Tatars as genocide

The House of Commons of Canada unanimously recognized the mass deportation of Crimean Tatars in 1944 as an act of genocide.

The ambassador of Ukraine to Canada, Yulia Kovaliv, said this on her Facebook page.

"The Canadian House of Commons has just unanimously approved a resolution recognizing the mass deportation of Crimean Tatars by the Soviet regime in 1944 as an act of genocide. Now May 18 every year in Canada will be marked as the Crimean Tatar Deportation ("Surgünlik") Memorial Day," the diplomat writes.

The deportation of Crimean Tatars has already been recognized as a genocide in Ukraine, Latvia and Lithuania. In 2019, such an initiative was approved by the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Canadian Parliament.
