US President Joe Biden's administration will work with its allies to transfer Soviet-made tanks to Ukraine so that our country can strengthen its defense in the eastern regions where battles with Russian occupants are ongoing.
This was reported by The New York Times.
This decision was made in response to a request from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, a U.S. official said.
This is the first time since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine that the United States has agreed to act as an intermediary to help hand over "Soviet" tanks, which the Ukrainian armed forces are able to use.
According to an official on condition of anonymity, deliveries will begin shortly. It is not specified how many tanks will be sent and from which countries the deliveries will take place.
As a reminder, Germany is also ready to provide military equipment.
However, the German Minister of Economy and Vice Chancellor Robert Gabek rejected the calls of Ukraine to provide even more support in the fight against Russia due to the security concerns of his own country. He said this in an interview with the Rheinische Post.
"In everything we do, we are very careful not to take any rash steps that could make Germany a target for Russia," he said.
According to Gabek, this is hard for Ukraine to understand.
"But in politics there is no morally unimpeachable position. But there is always a reasoning to prevent greater evil. All political steps are derived from that," he added.
