Israel and Turkey discuss construction of gas pipeline to supply Europe - Reuters

Israel and Turkey are discussing the construction of a gas pipeline to Israel's Leviathan field. It could become an alternative to Russian gas supplies to southern Europe.

This was reported by Reuters.

Government and industry representatives from both countries say that it would require difficult maneuvering to reach any deal.

The idea, first conceived several years ago, is to build an underwater pipeline from Turkey to Israel's largest offshore natural gas field, Leviathan. The gas would flow into Turkey and on to neighboring Southern European countries seeking to move away from Russia.

A senior Turkish official told the publication that negotiations have been ongoing since Israeli President Isaac Herzog visited Ankara in early March, and "concrete decisions" on the proposed route and the organizations involved could follow in the coming months.

However, industry representatives are more cautious, saying that production restrictions and geopolitics could leave the plan dead weight.
