Ireland, Norway and Spain have officially recognized Palestine as an independent state. The decision was announced by the prime ministers of the countries, Reuters reports.
They hope that this will bring peace to the Middle East.
Israel recalled its ambassadors from Ireland and Norway in response to their decision to recognize the Palestinian state.
Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz condemned the move, saying it would “reward jihadists from Hamas and Iran.”
“Ireland and Norway intend today to send a message to the Palestinians and the world: terrorism pays,” Katz said, adding that the move could hamper efforts to secure a ceasefire and the return of hostages held in Gaza.
Katz also threatened to recall the ambassador to Spain if it decides to recognize Palestinian statehood.
Earlier, about 143 of the 193 UN member states recognized the Palestinian state.
