Russian Ambassador to Poland Sergey Andreev was summoned to the Polish Foreign Ministry on Wednesday morning, where he was handed a note on the expulsion of 45 Russian diplomats suspected of espionage.
The Russian state news agency TASS reported on the fact that the note was handed over with a list of individuals.
Ambassador Andreev himself is not on the list; he will continue working in Poland.
Russian diplomats must leave the country at different times, maximum within five days, said the Russian ambassador.
Andreev noted that diplomatic relations between Russia and Poland formally continue.
According to Andreev, there are no grounds for accusations of espionage, but this is Poland's sovereign decision, and Russia has the right to respond on a reciprocal basis.
Earlier on Wednesday, Polish media reported that the authorities had decided to expel about 40 Russian diplomats from Poland for their activities that do not correspond to the status of a diplomat, which in the language of diplomacy means espionage.
