German Chancellor Olaf Scholz opposed the introduction of a no-fly zone in Ukraine. Instead, he stressed the effectiveness of the sanctions imposed against Russia. This was reported by Die Welt.
"We will not create a no-fly zone over Ukraine. That would mean a direct military confrontation with Russia, with Russian fighters," he said and added: "I agree with U.S. President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron and other allies that there should be no armed conflict between NATO and Russia. No one can want that."
Scholz added that Germany, together with its allies, has prepared sanctions that have affected Russia "more than it imagined." In response to the attack on Ukraine, the German government also plans to increase funding for the armed forces and reduce dependence on Russian supplies.
The EU imposed a fourth package of sanctions against Russia in connection with its military aggression against Ukraine. In particular, the EU Council banned all agreements with certain state-owned companies and new investments in the Russian energy sector.
