Already by the fall of this year Germany must completely abandon coal from Russia, and by the end of the year - to become almost independent of Russian oil. In an interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, German Deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister Robert Habeck made this statement.
However, it will be more difficult to abandon Russian gas, because Germany does not have its own facilities for the import of liquefied natural gas. Germany plans to build corresponding terminals.Habek notes that the German authorities have plans to completely abandon the import of energy from Russia. He notes that he "understands everyone who calls for an immediate embargo because of Putin's brutal war of aggression," but stressed that he is "responsible for the whole country.
The German minister clarifies the government and must consider the consequences of the decisions made.
"We are not talking about sacrificing a little personal comfort, but about serious cuts, economic and social: in the case of an immediate ban on imports we are talking about a reduction in supply next winter, the economic downturn and high inflation, hundreds of thousands of people losing their jobs" heating and electricity among other things. The sanctions should be such that we can withstand... But we work every day, really every day, and sometimes overnight, to reduce our dependence on Russian oil, coal and gas," Habek added.
