Ukraine's membership in NATO was not relevant in the near future - Stoltenberg

Ukraine's membership in NATO was not on the agenda in the near future. This was stated by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, speaking at the Diplomacy Forum in Antalya.

"Do you want to live in a world where big powers are forcing small countries to do things they don't want to do? That's not the world we want to live in. The whole idea that this is a provocation, that Ukraine is doing what it wants is turning the world upside down and violating the fundamental principles that Russia also signed up to," the Secretary General said.

According to him, Ukraine should decide for itself whether it wants to apply for membership in the Alliance.

"And then, of course, the 30 NATO allies have to decide whether Ukraine is ready for membership. And it has long been clear that membership is not something inevitable for Ukraine, not something relevant in the near future. But, again, it's about the principle of respecting the right of every nation to choose its own path," he added.
