Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov have been added to the list of people who have been hit by European Union sanctions, Interfax-Ukraine reported.

"President Putin and Foreign Minister Lavrov are on the sanctions list... The only leaders in the world who have fallen under EU sanctions are Assad from Syria, Lukashenko from Belarus, and now Putin from Russia," Josep Borrell, the EU high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, said at a news conference following a meeting of the EU Foreign Ministers Council in Brussels on Friday.

For his part, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he intends to impose sanctions against Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Secretary Sergei Lavrov, and called on partners in the West to take action on SWIFT.

"The UK will soon impose sanctions against President Putin and Foreign Secretary Sergei Lavrov in addition to the sanctions package the UK announced yesterday," The Independent quoted Downing Street as saying.

"The prime minister called on (NATO) leaders to take immediate action on SWIFT," he added.
