The United States plans to impose sanctions against Russian President Vladimir Putin as early as Friday, two sources familiar with the decision tell CNN, UNN reports.
"The Russian leader will be a crucial target in an attempt to impose costs on the Russian economy and Putin's inner circle following the Russian invasion of Ukraine," the report said.
Other Russian officials are likely to be included, according to one source.
The U.S. action follows reports that the European Union plans to impose sanctions on Putin and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
U.S. President Joe Biden said sanctions against Putin are under consideration, telling CNN's Caitlan Collins on Thursday that the option is "being discussed."
