SBU says foreign intelligence services were involved in DDoS attack on Ukrainian banks and state websites

The Security Service of Ukraine has noticed a trace of foreign intelligence services during the DDoS attacks, which since yesterday have been continuing in Ukraine. The agency suggests that the Russian Federation may be involved, and an investigation is ongoing. This was reported by the head of the Department of cybersecurity SBU Ilya Vitiuk during a briefing.

"It is too early to talk about the specific perpetrators. However, today we already see the following, the cost of such an attack reaches millions of dollars. No hacker or even a group of hackers can spend such funds and then not get any material benefit," Vitiuk said.

He noted that cyber attacks of this scale can be carried out only by the state.

"That is, a special infrastructure is created for such attacks, because it is impossible to buy such a DDoS attack on the black market. We can clearly see the trace of foreign intelligence services here. There are some signs of similarity with the attacks of January 13-14," said Vitiuk.

He suggested that only one country - Russia - could be interested in such DDoS attacks against Ukraine.

"We see a certain similarity of infrastructure and we can tentatively say that they are connected. The only country that is interested in such strikes against our state is Russia. But this will be established as part of the investigation," Vitiuk summarized.
