Verkhovna Rada approves increased responsibility for anti-Semitism

Parliament has passed the Act establishing criminal liability for manifestations of anti-Semitism (No. 5110).

The law provides for the regulation of the provisions of the Criminal Code in accordance with the provisions of the draft law "On Preventing and Combating Anti-Semitism in Ukraine", which legally regulates the issues of combating and preventing anti-Semitism and its manifestations in Ukraine.

The law amends Article 161 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine in terms of criminal liability for displays of antisemitism.

The amendments to the article provide for a fine of 200 to 500 untaxed minimum incomes or restraint of liberty for up to five years with or without deprivation of the right to occupy certain positions or engage in certain activities for up to three years for committing the corresponding offence.

Similar actions, combined with violence, deceit or threats, as well as committed by a public official shall be punished by a fine of five hundred to one thousand untaxed minimum incomes of citizens or imprisonment of two to five years with deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for up to three years or without it.

Committed by an organized group of persons or resulting in serious consequences shall be punished by imprisonment for a term of five to eight years.
