The European Union should help Ukraine increase its energy sustainability. European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said this in a blog posted on the website of the European External Action Service on February 6.
"As we seek to address the EU's own energy and climate goals and increase our resilience, we must do the same for Ukraine. In terms of energy security, Ukraine today is already better prepared for any conflict. However, as in the rest of Europe, real energy security can only be achieved through increased investment in domestic renewable energy sources and better connections with the EU market," he said.
The European diplomat said the February 7 meeting of the EU-U.S. Energy Council in Washington "will provide an opportunity to achieve even closer coordination of the energy market reforms needed in Ukraine to strengthen corporate governance and transparency ahead of Ukraine's synchronization with the European electricity grid planned for 2023."
"We will also work to increase return flows within the existing gas transportation infrastructure," he said.
